The Lyon residence is an existing home that Riverbend Builders remodeled in two phases. This cozy, log style home is located northeast of Bozeman, off Jackson Creek Road. The homeowner was looking to increase the usable space in the home, which was accomplished by finishing the basement and adding an entry way mudroom. Because of the home’s mountain location, we also made sure to use durable materials that would provide easy maintenance and building techniques that would improve the function of the home during the snowy winter months.

The basement remodel added a spacious living room and finished bathroom to the home. By incorporating soapstone flooring and countertops as well as functional improvements like a laundry sink and extensive sound dampening in the living room, we created a comfortable space with longevity and durability built in. The upstairs also got some attention with a remodel of the master bathroom and the addition of a Tulikivi stove in the main floor living room for added comfort in colder weather.

Changing the entry way configuration of the home to include a mudroom allowed us to solve several weather-related issues as well as creating a very functional space. Rather than matching the existing log style, we framed the addition and used materials that would help create a visual contrast. Then we tied it all together by incorporating a large log truss into the design. A new window and doors featuring glass inserts let light in to the space. While a reclaimed barn wood door between the mudroom and the main home adds a hint of rustic style.

We also changed the roof pitch from a shed style roof to a gable roof and added a bonderized standing seam metal roof to the whole home. This allowed us to tie the build together visually while providing a durable, low maintenance roof for years to come. Our changes to the roof also improved snow management and drainage, reducing snow buildup in front of the entry way. The front stairway was built using bar grate treads that allow snow to pass through, minimizing maintenance and shoveling. The owner was fantastic to work with, he was open to our ideas and approaches and we are thrilled with the results of this remodel.
